Sydney was called to the Bar in 1994. He practices in all areas of medical law including clinical negligence and professional discipline. He has represented doctors at the MPTS (formerly GMC) from IOP to final hearings, nurses at the NMC and optometrists at the GOC. He accepts instructions concerning disciplinary matters before these and other health professions’ regulatory bodies.
He has a well-established clinical negligence practice.
Sydney also has a substantial practice in personal injury covering road traffic accidents, workplace accidents, highways and occupiers liability.
Complementing his civil litigation practice Sydney has developed expertise in civil costs under the CPR and writes on detailed assessment for a web publication.
Sydney has extensive training and a developing practice in both domestic and international arbitration involving commercial and investment treaty disputes. He holds the qualification MCIArb obtained by examination. He has been appointed to the neutral panels of arbitrators of AFSA (the Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa, Johannesburg), and the LCIA-MIAC, (Mauritius). He is currently undergoing training towards obtaining the FCIArb diploma.
Subject to professional rules in force, Sydney welcomes enquiries from parties and attorneys out of the jurisdiction (particularly in sub-Saharan Africa) on matters concerning arbitration.
His extensive advocacy experience ranges from the County Court to the Court of Appeal, Coroners Court and Specialist Tribunals.
