Rachel’s practice covers a range of civil areas of law as well as cases in the specialist Court of Protection and disputes between individuals and the state (including the Police, education authorities and schools).
Rachel has extensive experience in courts and tribunals and a deserved reputation for her friendly and approachable manner and excellent client care.
Rachel qualified as a barrister in 2000 and was in practice in London before taking a prolonged break from the Bar during which time she worked as an “in-house” lawyer, ran a business, and also had a career break with her family. She returned to the Bar in 2016 and joined 1COR in 2019.
Rachel is always keen to maintain her clients’ focus on what they want to achieve from litigation and how they can do so in the most cost-effective and least stressful way. Sometimes this involves difficult discussions which Rachel will not shy away from, whilst also acknowledging that litigation is so often about more than simply “winning” and “losing”.
For some years Rachel was a Trustee of a local educational charity and a Governor at a local primary school with a large number of children on the SEN register.
Rachel’s broad “life experience” helps her to relate to people of all backgrounds and her collaborative approach with clients is regularly commented on, as is her ability to give clear and accessible guidance and advice.
Away from work Rachel enjoys sea swimming, skiing and live music and theatre.
Rachel deals with a broad range of property disputes. She acts for both landlords and tenants in possession and deposit proceedings and also has wide experience in cases involving service charges, leases, property-related injunctions and boundary disputes.
Rachel also has expertise in applications for Charging Orders and Orders for Sale as well as applications brought under The Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act 1996.
Rachel deals with all levels of commercial and contractual cases from those on the small claims track through to high value disputes. She has experience in a broad range of contract disputes and can advise on paper as well as act for clients in court.
Rachel undertakes personal injury work and acts for private individuals as well as for companies, charities and other organisations. She is able to give advice before proceedings are even issued as well as act for clients right up until trial.
Her warm personality and experience of dealing with vulnerable witnesses and clients is of particular value in cases involving serious injury and fatality.
Rachel has a busy Court of Protection practice and accepts instructions from individual interested persons as well as the Official Solicitor and local authorities.
Rachel acts in cases where mental capacity and best interests are in dispute (health, welfare and deprivation of liberty cases).
Rachel also acts in cases involving the property and affairs of people without capacity, for instance where there is a dispute regarding who should have the power to make decisions on their behalf.
Rachel undertakes work on behalf of parties in disputes with the state and involved in inquests. Her public law cases include education, mental health and community care matters and actions involving the Police.
Rachel accepts instructions from both “sides” in disputes between individuals and the state and her ability to consider and explain a case from all angles is very helpful to direct access clients.
Rachel accepts instructions from all interested persons in respect of inquests, including families, and her experience of dealing with vulnerable and traumatised witnesses and clients is of particular value.
